I don't care about the nonsensical sentences because I don't rely on apps to figure out what people say in real life. In fact, no app will be helpful after this initial stage besides the simpler flash card apps which become more efficient and useful for intermediate and advanced levels.īut as far as language apps go, I find it perhaps the most effective at just hammering in the basic vocabulary and structures. I'd say after that initial A0 to A1 phase, it's totally useless and you should focus on consuming real content. It has an advantage over a simple flash card app in that your actually forming 'novel' sentences. It's basically a way to build up a little bit of passive vocabulary. It is what it is, it's a free resource, use it if it's helpful, don't rely on it as your main source of study.ĭuolingo isn't great but it fulfills a purpose for beginners: getting a repetitive and comprehensible exposure to the basic structures of the language. Like, I think it gets more hate than it deserves, yet I also think there are people who give it more praise than it deserves. Overall I have kind of a weird feeling about Duolingo. It also isn't the best for 100% new beginners because the courses aren't always sequenced in a very logical or helpful way (though the gamification could help with motivation for people who have never learned a foreign language before). Once you are around a solid A2 level, and definitely by the time you are B1, you're probably going to want to consider dropping Duolingo just because it will take up more time than it is actually worth. I was wasting way too much time repeating things I already knew, learning things that were completely irrelevant, and translating the same sentences back and forth.
Once I got to a certain point with my Swedish, however, I just had to stop using Duolingo. I think Duolingo works best for people around an A1 or A2 level who want to fill in vocabulary gaps with some common enough, although not always practical, new words. The grammar tips are also surprisingly helpful (I think a lot of people skip them, or aren't even aware that they exist, which is why you sometimes hear people say Duolingo teaches no grammar). I used to use it a lot when I first started learning Swedish, it actually isn't that bad for just learning vocabulary. I can tell you about my personal experience with it.
